When the Prototype Becomes the Product
Vercel’s v0 started as a curiosity – a text-to-UI tool that could spit out React components from a plain English prompt. A year in, it’s become something more disruptive: a direct alternative to the Figma-to-developer handoff workflow that design teams have built their entire process around. Startups are shipping interfaces without ever opening Figma. Developers are generating production-ready components without waiting on a designer. The pipeline that once required two or three people now sometimes requires one.
This isn’t a story about AI replacing designers wholesale. It’s a story about where design budget decisions get made – and who wins when those decisions shift. Figma’s strength has always been its grip on the handoff: designers build in Figma, developers receive specs in Figma, and everyone pays for Figma to stay in the loop. v0 doesn’t attack that relationship directly. It just makes it optional for a growing slice of the market.

What v0 Actually Does That Figma Doesn’t
v0 generates UI code – specifically Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui components – directly from prompts or screenshots. A developer can describe a dashboard layout, a login screen, or a data table, and v0 returns working React code that can go straight into a codebase. There’s no design file. There’s no handoff. There’s no Inspect panel. The output is the artifact, and the artifact is already code.
Figma’s core value proposition is collaborative, visual design with developer handoff baked in. That proposition holds when there’s a dedicated design team and a product with enough visual complexity to warrant careful, iterated mockups. But for internal tools, MVPs, side projects, and early-stage products, that proposition is increasingly a luxury. v0 fits a workflow that Figma was never really built for: the solo developer who needs something that looks professional in under an hour.

The Budget Conversation Is Already Happening
Design tool spending tends to get re-evaluated when headcount changes – when a startup downsizes its design function, when a new engineering hire is expected to cover more ground, or when a product team is asked to move faster with fewer people. In those moments, Figma’s per-seat pricing gets scrutinized. A team that previously needed five Figma seats for active design and dev access may find that two seats plus a v0 subscription covers the same ground at a lower monthly cost.
Figma’s developer-tier pricing model has already been a point of friction. When Figma overhauled its pricing in 2023 to charge for viewer seats that previously cost nothing, the backlash was significant enough to force a partial rollback. That history matters because it signals where the market’s pressure points are – and v0 lands squarely on one of them. Teams that felt burned by the viewer-seat change are now looking at tools that don’t require them to pay for every person who touches a component.
v0 isn’t free at scale – Vercel charges based on generation credits, and heavy usage adds up. But the cost model feels different to engineering-led teams because it maps to usage rather than headcount. A developer who generates 20 components in a sprint pays for 20 generations. A Figma seat, by contrast, charges for existence on the team whether or not a developer ever opens the tool. That distinction is small in a well-resourced company and significant in a lean one.
The more telling signal is how v0 gets adopted within organizations. It rarely comes in through a procurement process. A developer finds it, uses it on a project, ships something with it, and mentions it in a team standup. Then two more people start using it. By the time anyone asks whether the team still needs that extra tier of Figma seats, v0 is already embedded. This pattern – bottoms-up adoption that quietly erodes an incumbent’s seat count – is the same one that made Figma a threat to Sketch a decade ago.
Figma’s Answer and Its Limitations
Figma has not been standing still. Its own AI features – auto-layout suggestions, content generation, and the Figma AI tools rolled out through 2024 – are attempts to make the design-to-code gap smaller from the design side. Figma’s bet is that the canonical source of truth for any UI should still live in a design file, and that AI can make it easier to generate and iterate on that file without abandoning the visual canvas.
That bet may hold for enterprise product teams where design systems, brand consistency, and stakeholder review cycles actually matter. A company running a consumer app with dozens of components in a shared library needs Figma in a way that a three-person B2B startup probably doesn’t. The problem for Figma is that the three-person startup is where tomorrow’s mid-market customer comes from – and if those teams learn to build without Figma, they may not relearn the habit when they scale.

Where This Leaves the Design Tool Market
v0’s rise doesn’t kill Figma. What it does is fracture the assumption that design tooling is a universal requirement for shipping software. The developer who used to need at least a Figma viewer seat to participate in the design process now has a credible alternative that keeps them entirely inside their code environment. That’s a different kind of competition – not a feature battle, but a workflow substitution.
For Vercel, v0 is a strategic layer on top of its hosting and deployment infrastructure. Every team that adopts v0 is a team that’s more likely to deploy on Vercel, use Vercel’s edge functions, and pay for Vercel’s higher tiers as their projects grow. The design tool angle is almost incidental to the actual business logic. v0 isn’t trying to beat Figma – it’s trying to make Vercel indispensable earlier in the product development cycle, before a startup ever thinks about infrastructure procurement.
The sharper question for Figma is what happens to its developer-mode value when developers have a tool that generates code without ever referencing a design file. Figma’s developer mode was positioned as the bridge between design and engineering. If engineers are building the bridge themselves from the engineering side, that feature’s value proposition has a narrower audience than Figma needs it to have.
